7 habits for working productively in a coworking space

Seven practical habits recommended by our members for staying focused, running tight meetings and getting the most from the community.

Used well, a coworking space strikes the balance between the mess of working from home and the rigidity of a traditional office. We have compiled seven habits from conversations with Yankı members.

1. Start the day with a quiet focus block

The first two hours of the morning are the best time for your hardest task. Put your headphones on, turn off phone notifications and pick one of the quiet floors. Leave socialising and coffee breaks for midday.

2. Hold meetings in a room, not in the shared area

A long video call in the shared area tires both you and the people at the next desk. Do not hesitate to use your meeting room credit; phone booths are ideal for five-to-ten-minute calls.

3. Match your calendar to the location

If your client meeting is in Maslak, go to Maslak that day. Because your membership is valid in every city, on trips to Ankara or Izmir you also find a place to work without paying extra desk fees.

4. Attend one community event a week

Founder breakfasts, tax workshops and investor pitches are not just learning opportunities but direct business opportunities. A good share of our members found their first customer or first teammate at these events.

5. Set yourself "closed door" hours

An inherent drawback of a shared space is interruption. Tell teammates your focus hours, put a quiet-mode card on your desk and block time in your calendar.

6. Use the kitchen and shared areas with a sharing mindset

Small things make a big difference: putting your cup in the machine, taking phone calls in a booth and clearing the fridge on Friday. Our community guidelines exist to make this easy for everyone.

7. Close the day with a ritual

The biggest problem with working from home is that the work never ends. Coworking can solve this: you start work when you walk in and leave it when you walk out. Before you go, write tomorrow's three priorities, close your laptop and clear the desk.

These habits look small, but together they give one to two hours of focus a day. Decide which one to start with and try it for a week; your community manager will be glad to share rules and tips.

Bonus: Meet your community manager

The community manager at each location is there to introduce you to the right people. In your first week as a new member, ask for a short introduction chat and describe your business, the collaborations you are looking for and the expertise you need. Many business partnerships start with that simple conversation.
